About this event

This Water Luncheon Webinar is sponsored by the Ohio Water Resources Center and the Water Management Association of Ohio.

Abstract: Per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) have applications in many industries due to their innate chemical properties. However, they are linked to numerous human health concerns, which has led to both the development of replacement compounds for legacy PFAS and the need for removal of PFAS from, e.g., drinking water sources. Herein, our focus is the air emissions of PFAS and the processes that influence their atmospheric fate and transport. We are conducting laboratory experiments to quantify 1) thermodynamic properties that govern the atmospheric phase of PFAS; and 2) chemical kinetics that influence their atmospheric lifetime and by-product formation. Complementary to our laboratory efforts are field observations that aim to investigate the relationship between air concentrations and atmospheric deposition of select PFAS, downwind from suspect sources of PFAS air emissions (including a landfill, a wastewater treatment facility, a hazardous waste incinerator, and a chemical manufacturer, among others). Ultimately, we will use our results to inform numerical models across different spatial scales; through collaborative efforts, our laboratory results will inform predictive models for PFAS physicochemical properties, and through our own parallel efforts, we will evaluate the representation of PFAS fate and transport within the Community Multiscale Air Quality model for PFAS.
