Location
The 2025 conference and tours will explore the Hocking River watershed and surrounding area. This region is characterized by a mix of rolling hills, forested landscapes, narrow valleys, and small floodplains, typical of Ohio's unglaciated Appalachian Plateau. The area features sandstone cliffs and rock outcrops, especially prominent in Hocking Hills State Park, which is a natural landmark within the watershed. The region's terrain is highly dissected, with steep slopes that contribute to rapid surface runoff and potential erosion challenges. The land use is a blend of rural agricultural areas, forested tracts, and small towns, with Athens and Logan being two of the largest communities within the watershed. Tours will take attendees to a selection of natural areas and conservation sites that highlight the beauty and unique qualities of the region.
Agenda
Through field visits, participants gain first-hand knowledge of regional conditions and restoration efforts with broad application. Presentations address a broader scope of topics, addressing other issues and initiatives of regional and statewide importance.
Day 1: Explore, Experience, and Engage – Restoration Benefits the Region
The tour will take attendees to the following sites, with experts providing insights on conservation work and historical narrative:
